Dr. Larry Louie opens an image on his computer to show a scan of one of his patients, who is in an early stage of macular degeneration. It's a progressive eye condition concerning leakage of eye fluid that, left unchecked, will dry out and damage the macula, a spot on the retina with the greatest acuity. If a neophyte didn't know any better, one could swear the onscreen image was that of the sun with random spots, but also with veins criss-crossing the surface.
"Macular degeneration is one of the leading causes of blindness in our seniors today," says Larry, gesturing towards his new Optimal Coherence Tomography machine, responsible for the scan on his monitor. "What this machine can do is be able to be more accurate in terms of our diagnosis and correction of macular degeneration. It scans your retina to show the degree of defect or progression of defect or other macular problems."
It's this type of technology that allows Larry to keep pace with the latest developments in optometry at his clinic, Louie Eyecare Centre. It's also one extra service he can provide for his clients, especially his older patients.
