Ken Iaci has cooked for some pretty big names throughout his career, including Hollywood actors Robert De Niro and Al Pacino, former NHL stars Wayne Gretzky and Trevor Linden, and renowned local businessmen Brian Jessel and Jim Pattison. Lucky for Stevestonites and visitors to the historic fishing village, the chef extraordinaire left the big city behind for a slower pace at Market at Papi's.
This cozy little bistro is the antithesis of corporatization. Homey red-and-white checked tablecloths, white candles, Italian artifacts and warm earth-tone walls adorned with photographs that tell the long, rich history of Vancouver’s first family of Italian cuisine, fill the pint-size diner. You might recognize Ken’s last name. In 1939, his family opened Iaci`s Casa Capri, which became a landmark until it closed its doors in 1982. Later, the Iaci family was inducted into the BC Restaurant Hall of Fame.
Ken has worked alongside a number of famed chefs, both here and abroad, including most notably in England under the tutelage of the world famous Anton Mosimann. Returning to Vancouver in his mid-20s, Ken was hired as the executive chef at The Cannery Seafood Restaurant. The following year he was named Top Chef in Canada by New York’s prestigious Town and Country magazine. Suffice to say, Ken comes with an impressive culinary pedigree.
