    Eastside Bargain

The clientele are mostly retired folk and working class service staff and labourers from the area. Very popular locally due to the charming and polite immigrant family, the obvious care and attention to quality and yes, the cheap and cold Kokanee on tap. Weekly specials offered are seafood and mushroom and minestrone soups, deliciously spiced meatloaf, real turkey dinners, lasagna etc. all made from recipes provided by customers who cook and help the owners to expand their menu. The deluxe burger special is a monster with fries for under 4 dollars. The fries are hand cut, the fish is all fresh with generous portions. The Indonesian and Thai offerings are delicious. Inexpensive, eclectic, clean and friendly with an added dollop of clever conversation and the latest hockey game.

Halibut on a budget, thick atmosphere

I had a craving for fried fish, and didn't feel like going all the way to Steveston. A little research turned up "Dundas Fish & Chips" and I was immediately impressed by the no-cuteness name: f&c for sale, on Dundas street. The fish was good and fresh, if a little overdone, served with a monstrous pile of soggy fries, nice and hot. The ambience was kind of stark, reminiscent of the movies "Barfly" and "Scarecrow". I couldn't figure out the numerous clientele at first, but it soon hit me: draft beer at $4 a pint, last Wednesday of the month? Welfare Wednesday! Vancouver Mardi Gras! These folks had been there all afternoon, if not all day. The service was a bit slow, what with the massive communal thirst being dealt with. The surroundings were clean and tidy, if a bit bleak. The prices were ridiculous, most of the meals being in the range of 6 to 10 bucks, the biggest item on the menu $13.50. If you have a large appetite, a thick skin, and a thin wallet, this is the place.
