When a local politician walks into PerksCafe, owner Rachel Chen greets her with a big warm hug. Rachel takes the order as the two exchange stories and catch up. Her bright red hair — a new dye job — is the topic of the day. Then Rachel heats up her milk steamer and makes a London Fog as she continues chatting.
Minutes later, she’s making a sandwich for a new customer and serving up tea to a regular who’s just wandered in from a Vancouver rainstorm.
Managing a steady flow of customers is second nature to Rachel, who’s been working in the restaurant industry since she was a teen, working the floor and flipping burgers at the diner at Save On Meats, which was owned by her family at the time. “It was really, really fun,” she remembers.
From then on, it’s been hard to keep her away from the kitchen. At 26, she opened PerksCafé in Chinatown. The building, owned by a Chinese benevolent society, was looking for a new tenant on the ground floor. With her Chinese language skills and ties to the neighbourhood, Rachel was their first pick.
