“I like it steep, rocky, rooty, fast, cliff-edge, you name it," says Jorge, owner of Cyclepath Markham. "The more adrenalin the better! Some of my favourite rides, and some of the most dangerous I’ve ever done, are right in Toronto’s Don Valley. There are lots of trails in there that many people don’t know about.”
Born in Portugal, Jorge came to Toronto with his family when he was five years old, settling in the Bloor and Bathurst area of Toronto. At 13 he started his “professional” cycling career— delivering prescriptions for a drug store on what he describes as an "old clunker."
As a kid, he loved the speed of cycling, and marvelled at how far one could go under one’s own power, a fascination that continues in his work life today. His passion was there from the beginning. He’d ride all over the Greater Toronto Area and beyond, just to visit a bike shop he’d never been to before. On one of those visits, he was introduced to his first BMX bike. The rest, as they say, is history.
