“When I was younger, I did a lot of travelling,” says Kris Doy, founder and owner of Tribal Voices Imports. “And I fell in love with the items I was finding. So I decided to open a store that would deal directly with these artisans and sell their unique pieces here in Canada.”
Together with her husband Johnie, whom she met in Indonesia, Kris opened Tribal Voices Imports. For her, it’s a way to share pieces from artists around the world, but also to help preserve these cultures and artistic methods that are otherwise disappearing. “The only way to make sure this type of art is still being made is to encourage the artists,” Kris says. “And that’s what we do in our own way here: we provide an opportunity to showcase these artists and give them a way to keep practicing, keep their cultures intact and be successful in their work.”
