Some of the best business ideas come from a personal need. That was the case for Her Majesty’s Pleasure. Co-owner Sara Kardan, who saw nail care becoming a larger extension of fashion, wasn’t so impressed with her experiences at nail salons. “She loved going with her girlfriends and getting their nails done on Saturday,” says Jeff Armstrong, Sara’s husband and business partner. “But the reality was that they were going to a place that didn’t look nice, it wasn’t a pleasant experience, it didn’t have her leaving feeling better.”
The two took a year off to travel, looking to venture away from their big careers in architecture and investment banking. They visited different hotels, restaurants, spas and salons to seek inspiration, and discovered that the businesses they loved were those that focused on the experience, rather than on the end product. That sparked the idea for Her Majesty’s Pleasure and in October 2014, the couple opened a place that created an experience around manicures and pedicures, as opposed to just a place to get your nails done.
