The pretzels in this bright Chinatown café are accompanied on the menu by other German treats like currywurst and sauerkraut – and, of course, beer (in steins) and schnapps. The pretzels are served warm with house-made mustard, or as part of a pretzel board that includes “stinky cheese sauce” along with pickles and cured meats.

Vancouver Alpen Club

The Deutsches Haus restaurant at the Vancouver Alpen Club is the closest thing you’ll find to an authentic German beer hall without leaving Vancouver – and has been for 80 years. Founded in 1935 as a social club for Vancouver’s German community, the club is now best known for its restaurant, which serves a hearty German menu of bratwurst, pork hock, schnitzel and, you guessed it, pretzels.

Yaletown Brewing Co

This large brewpub incorporates its Mainland Lager into the pretzels, which are baked in-house and served with house-made mustard and stout cheddar dip. It’s a prime spot for those who view beer as a must-have accompaniment to a pretzel, having won several awards for its beers and its weekly cask night.

Okay, the pretzels here are not made in house. In fact, they’re made daily by another entry on this list: Swiss Bakery, located right in the neighbourhood. Here, you can wash them down with one of the house-brewed beers and, if it’s Friday night, you can catch some live mariachi music, too. 33 Acres sources its food from local businesses that are the best at what they do, so in addition to pretzels, you’ll find Cartems doughnuts, Nelson the Seagull sandwiches and Earnest ice cream.

Breka Downtown Bakery Cafe

The two key numbers here are 24 and 7. As in, that’s when Breka is open. If you’re hit by a carb craving at 3:30 am, no problem – just wander over for a pretzel or pretzel bun. Once inside, you might also be tempted by a strudel or a slice of Black Forest cake. Breka’s other two locations, one nearby on Davie and one in East Vancouver on Fraser Street, are open all night, too.
