In one of the oldest homes in one of Calgary’s oldest neighbourhoods stands a two-and-a half storey bed and breakfast that has been meticulously renovated but still has that century-old charm. “We moved in and all the pipes were frozen and the place had been empty for a couple of years. It was a derelict, abandoned old joint. We maintained as much of the original woodwork as we could,” says Kelly Smith, owner of Hughes House Bed and Breakfast. “On the exterior, we were really true to the original to keep and preserve the original cedar siding and shingles.” The amenities have been updated with each bedroom having an ensuite bathroom with heated marble floors.
Kelly has lived in the home for about 20 years when he decided to turn it into Hughes House Bed and Breakfast. “I always liked people, so it seemed like a pretty good match,” says Kelly, who has now been living in the house for 32 years. “I’m retired. I live vicariously through my guests and end up chatting and having a glass of wine with people from all over the world.”
