They have a $3.49 special for breakfast on Sat and Sun if you order a beverage(this can be anything: coffee, tea, juice etc.). On the menu the breakfast is not even there. That goes to show you how much the Toucan is not a breakfast place. Therefore we could only assume it was the standard type of breakfast of 2 eggs, meat, toast and home fries..
However, their breakfast is lacking for several reasons:
(1) only one slice of bread
(2) don't have a choice between the meats - you get bacon and if you want anything else it is extra (I should have taken that option - only if I had known how small the portion size of the meal was)
(3) instead of home fries it is just regular fries and they give you such a small amount
I left the pub hungry after the breakfast since the portion was so small. I'm not a big person and I am female.
The service was not very good either. I asked for brown bread - got white bread instead. They did fix this but did not bring any jam and the waitress did not check in until about halfway through the meal so instead I just put the egg and bacon on top of my toast and ate it that way. I ordered a tea since I had to order a beverage to get the $3.49 breakfast which never arrived and it was still on my bill in the end. The waitress was at least fine with removing it immediately without fuss.
Very disappointing breakfast to say the least. I wonder how much their "regular" breakfast is if you don't order a beverage. I would have preferred to have paid more for the breakfast and gotten a bigger portion and had the choice of sausage, bacon or ham. Won't be going back there for breakfast ever again.
The Toucan and Kirkpatrick's is one Kingston's best Irish-British Pubs. This is, "the local," for many 21-40+ Kingstonians.
The Great selection of beers and liquor, live music at least one day a week, daily specials and sunday breakfast special, make this establishment a favorite. The staff is friendly, and the food is reasonably priced and is usually quite good. However, this place is a Pub first, then a Restaurant. It is solid UK+US "Pub Grub." Wings, Nachos, Meat Pies, Bangers and Mash Fish n' Chips are reliably awesome.
The review below is not an accurate depiction of the place, however, it may well take 45mins on a Sunday morning or afternoon to get food quickly due to the $3.50 breakfast special and the hangover destructing properties inherent to the aura of the toucan, which draw many over-zealous drinkers.
The Toucan is the best and oldest pub in Kingston.Sir John A would have a pint or two in this historic pub. Great food and wonderful atmosphere!Summertime brings out a very nice patio tucked away in a limestone path behind historic buildings in downtown Kingston.
