This is 'one of the best Thai Restaurants in Ottawa. Food is always consistent and the curries and soups are great. The downside to this establishment is the customer service. The staff are not personable and at times, service is very slow. You could lunch there once a week for 6 months and it's like they have never seen you before. Staff truly lack customer service etiquette. In addition, the washroom requires a serious cleaning job and a bit of an upgrade. Reminiscent of a public Lou.
Who doesn't love Thai food? Most of us get Thai cravings as often as we get cravings for Chinese food and when that happens you want to sate that appetite. If our experience at Khao Thai is a standard measure, it's hard to comprehend why customers return. In decades of dining out, I can say that I have never seen smaller portions. Without exaggeration our Mains were no bigger than Appetizers. But first to the starters: Shrimp Spring Rolls and Tom Kha Gai. You cannot take plain, unseasoned shrimp and wrap them excessively and as tightly as if you were bandaging a femoral hemorrhage, and call them Spring Rolls. Rolled in the form of a 'cone joint' these mini clubs required both of us to use our molars just to break the wrapper so overdone and thickly wrapped were they. The Tom Kha Ghai was a nice portion and enough for two but where was the stuffing? The citrus infused broth was rounded deliciously with the coconut milk but when you're fishing for what's meant to be in the soup, you wonder why they didn't just served the broth in a mug. The Pad Thai and Tod Ka Thiem (beef with white pepper & mushrooms) had plenty of flavour but I wondered about who was working the kitchen that night. Our, very chewy (sliced with the grain rather than against) beef dish had every vegetable but mushrooms and the Pad Thai was one of the most curious presentations I've yet seen of this national dish. Everything was thrown together as in a stir-fry and the dressing was oddly dark and brown which is what we would expect had we ordered Pad Se-ieu . And what of these insultingly small portions? Consider the last time you shared a meal with 3 other people... everyone does their bit to share a plate equally. Well with our Mains that night each of us had just enough food on our plates as if to suggest we were sharing our meal with a group twice the size. It was so laughable that I felt sure cameras must be rolling somewhere. Another measure of a restaurant is the state of it's restrooms. At Khao Thai the washroom is an afterthought and to use the word disgraceful, would be polite. If that restroom had seen a cleaner in the preceding 3 days you could have knocked me over with the proverbial 'feather' instead of the odour in that room. Walking through the Byward, almost an hour after our meal. we had to acknowledge that we were both rather hungry.
Nothing but the best!!!! I love going to Khao Thai. It is a treat to go there everytime we go. The food is AWESOME, the service is GREAT. Keep up the good work & food Khao Thai. We live in Orleans, and we don't mind going all the way DT to eat good thai @ Khao Thai!!! It is all worth it!!
I love this place, food is always fresh and great. Service is also great, can't go wrong with the price of the meals and it is a great place to go with group of friends or take a date.
I've been to many thai restaurants across Ottawa, and have to say this one is the best so far. The Tom Kha Gai (Coconut Curry soup) is perfect, with a generous portion of shrimp. The Pad Bami is the perfect Thai-Indonesian fusion dish ever. The Pad Khee Mao offers a little glow, this dish tastes fresh and natural, they add no MSG to their dishes which is more than I can say about all other Thai restaurants. The Ambience is also perfect, with authentic Thai artifacts on display, and Thai music every weekend. If you are looking for the Thai experience of your life, come here, you won't be disappointed.
Best Thai place in Ottawa. Delicious curries and stirfries. Reasonable prices for what you get. Food is very fresh and natural tasting. Clean, beautiful decor and ambience.
Lovely little restaurant. Nice atmosphere, service was good, food was excellent.
We went there on a Monday night, thinking it was not going to be busy, but it was. We got a table (lucky us) and got water right away, but it took 15 minutes to get the waiter to take our orders (I had to ask for it). The food was fine, but everybody was disappointed that we had to wait so long for the waiter to take our drink order. In fact, the waiter ended up taking our drink and food order at the same time, odd....
good restaurant, decent thai food, the best I had in ottawa so far
